CHATEAU DE LA SELVE
Benoit & Florence Chazallon
Dating back to the 13th century, Chateau de la Selve stands proudly as a fortified residence that once served as the historical boundary between the Empire and the Kingdom of France. Today, this charming estate has been transformed into a family-owned winery nestled in the picturesque Ardèche region of France, expertly managed by the capable hands of Benoît and Florence Chazallon. Benoît's journey in winemaking began as an assistant winemaker at various domaines in the renowned Rhône Valley. However, destiny brought him back to Chateau de la Selve in the early 2000s, where he embarked on crafting wines under his own label. This winery holds steadfast to its mission of preserving the estate's authenticity and heritage while embracing sustainable practices.
Located along the serene banks of the Chassezac River, in the heart of the Ardèche wine region, lie the exquisite Chateau de la Selve vineyards. These vineyards thrive on predominantly limestone and granite soils, while the Mediterranean climate blesses the region with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Scenic landscapes encompass the estate, boasting sprawling vineyards that grace the rolling hills. With a vast expanse of 44 hectares under cultivation, the vineyards proudly showcase an impressive diversity of five distinct grape varieties, including Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier. Cultivated organically and biodynamically, the grapes flourish in harmony with the ecosystem, leading to wines that genuinely express the unique terroir.
Inside the cellar, the winemaking process at Chateau de la Selve artfully combines tradition and innovation. The grapes are meticulously hand-picked and then undergo vinification through time-honoured methods. Ageing takes place in a harmonious blend of stainless steel and oak barrels, and the wines are bottled with the utmost care, avoiding fining or filtration. This meticulous approach culminates in a splendid range of wines that exude elegance, complexity, and a genuine sense of place.
