EMIDIO PEPE

Pepe Family

Emidio Pepe has managed to elevate his estate to Italian wines' highest rank.

Emidio Pepe established his own winery in 1964, in Torano, after working with his father and grandfather (making wine in Casa Pepe in 1889). He firmly believes that Trebbiano and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo have excellent ageing potential before anyone else. He devoted all his energy to these two native grape varieties, proving their incredible potential and showing it to the entire world. Since 1997, a new generation has arrived with Emidio's daughter, Sofia and Daniela who carry on the long qualitative tradition of the estate, based in particular on long breeding.

The climate balances the sea's soft and sapid influence together with the cold streams from the Gran Sasso Mountain, creating perfect conditions that allow a slow and progressive ripening of the flavours and an ideal balance between sugars and acidity. The clay and limestone soil hosts the roots, which go down for more than several meters. The soil also provides and feeds them with specific mineralogy that allows the wine to have complexity and longevity.

The estate fully biodynamically cultivates 15 hectares of vines. The plants are only treated with natural products: mine sulphur and copper water, and the workings are almost nonexistent to preserve the life and the soil biodiversity. The growing system is mainly pergola and a few rows to have balanced vintages each year.
