GABIN ET FÉLIX RICHOUX

Gabin et Félix Richoux

The Richoux family is, since 1610, associated with the best wines produced in Irancy, a beautiful village located in the Yonne region (North of Burgundy), just a few kilometres from Chablis. While Chablis and its surroundings are fully white, some gifted winemakers are delivering great Pinot Noir from Irancy, a steep vineyard forming an amphitheatre around the village.

Jean-Claude Richoux emerged as a prominent winemaker responsible for establishing the reputation of Irancy red wines. During the 1980s, when the prevailing trend favoured deeply coloured and robust Pinot Noir wines, Richoux remained committed to showcasing the natural style of Irancy's reds, characterized by their mineral and ethereal qualities.

Thierry, Jean-Claude's son representing the tenth generation, joined the domaine in 1979. The family farms 20 hectares located in various sectors of the appellation on limestone-Kimmeridgian soil. Their finest and best-exposed parcels are used to make the Irancy Rouge.

In best years, they also make two single-vineyard Irancy: one from the gradually sloping and clay-centric "Cailles" vineyard and the second from a vineyard called "Vaupessiot" with older vines and a full south-facing exposition overlooking the Yonne River. The estate has been fully organic-certified since 2013, and some biodynamic practices are also adopted, a true challenge in this northern climate. Yields are kept to a maximum of 45 hectoliters per hectare, and all the grapes are harvested manually with about 30 pickers involved.

In the cellar, the grapes are drastically sorted and destemmed before fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Another reason explaining the unique style of the Richoux family's wines relies on the extended élevage applied. The wines spend their first year in tank in large oak tanks (foudres), then a second year in smaller oak barrels.

The sons of Thierry, Gabin and Felix, are now in charge of the domaine. They keep the same recipe as Thierry while adding their own touch. Adapting themselves to global warming and the resulting hot recent vintages, the maceration sees lighter extraction based on an "infusion" approach.

Despite their northern origin, the wines exhibit a gorgeous, intense, ripe fruit with a lot of energy and aromatic lift. Supple, melting and vibrant, with exquisitely floral aromatics, the family's wines have a stunning ageing potential, blowing away a lot of connoisseurs during blind tastings.

Many reasons explaining why we are so glad to bring them to Singapore for the very first time!
