MAISON STEPHAN

Jean-Michel Stephan

Jean-Michel Stéphan created his domain in 1991. He originally comes from a farming family. He started making wine with 2 hectares in Côte-Rotie, Northern part of the Rhône-Valley and sold his production in bulk to wine merchants. In 1994, he decided to vinify and bottle his wines independently. In 2017, his son Romain joined forces to create Maison Stéphan.

Already having organic practices and significant dedication to the environment, he was certified a year after and is inspired by biodynamics. For example, he follows the lunar calendar for the vines' different developmental phases. On some plots, work can only be done with a horse or by foot, and the winemaker does not use sulfur in the winemaking process.

The 4.5 hectares vineyard is planted with Serine (a rare ancestor of Syrah), Syrah and Viognier grape varieties. Some of the vines are over 120 years old. Only red wines can be produced in this region. Hence Viognier is used as part of the blend to add floral notes to the wine.
