DOMAINE DE LA BOUÏSSIÈRE

Gilles & Thierry Faravel

Domaine de la Bouissière was created in 1958 by Antoine Faravel. He started working at 14 years old in the domaine Pierre Amadieu, in Loire Valley, and he became crop manager at 30. Today, the new generation is running the vineyard: Gilles is the eldest, and he is working in the vines. Thierry is the cellar master and the youngest, Claudine, is in charge of business development. The 17 hectares are spread over in the three crus of this area in the Southern Rhône Valley: Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Beaumes-de-Venise.

The vines are planted between 300 and 500 meters above sea level and are surrounded by the Dentelles de Montmirail. These iconic mountains are pictured on the bottles.

The Gigondas vineyards are an austere landscape, rough and stony, steeply sloped (from 300 to 500 meters) and facing northwest, with really less sun than in other plots.

The slopes of Vacqueyras are much gentler than they are in Gigondas, and vineyards are larger and more directly exposed to the sun. Soils here are mostly sand and clay, but there are some plateaux with “galets roulés,” the round quartz stones characteristic of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Only red varieties are planted on the vineyard. The main ones are Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. They share the land with Caladoc, a local grape, typical from the region. The Faravel are dictated to organic farming without being certified. Nevertheless, they stick to strict guidelines, using only sulfur, copper and other natural treatments. The harvest is done by hand. The ageing is done on foudre or tank.
