OUDIN

Nathalie & Isabelle Oudin

In 2007 Nathalie completed her oenology studies. She decided to come back home to continue her parent’s dream. Indeed, in the early ’90s, Jean-Claude and Christine Oudin bought back the estate, whose production used to go to the local cooperative. Nathalie, her sister Isabelle, and the rest of the family’s efforts finally paid out.

Indeed in the early 90’s Jean-Claude and Christine Oudin bought back the estate, whose production used to go to the local cooperative. Nathalie, her sister Isabelle, and the rest of the family’s efforts finally paid out.
7ha of vineyards spread over six well-placed parcels with an average vine age of 25yo. The rest are old vines, over 50 years old, located in the 1er Cru Vaucoupin. The Oudin's refused to employ herbicides and worked their soils from the outset. One-third of the Domaine's holdings are planted with Chardonnay's massal selections, two-thirds with high-quality clones.

Nathalie Oudin is not afraid to allow good wine exposure to air during the malolactic fermentation. The wine has very precise citrus fruit, good texture and a saline quality suggestive of the limestone bedrock and feels very composed and at ease.

Natalie is progressively imposing her own style. She is transitioning to ambient yeasts and employing organic methods when Chablis's inhospitable climate permits it. Long élevage on the lees in stainless steel followed by light filtration and fining if needed are the rudiments of her approach in the cuverie. The results are excellent: pure, concentrated and articulate expressions of their terroirs. For example, the Vaucoupin vines are located on one of the best sites of the 1er Crus, a steep southerly facing slope in fragmented Kimmeridgian limestone. Grapes come from 50yo vines, and the wine has a gunflint quality on the nose, then ripe citrus fruits with a marked salty, chalky flavour on the palate.
