RASPAIL-AY

Christophe & Anne Sophie Ay

Domaine Raspail-Ay has been raised as a cult Domaine in Gigondas (a village located in the southern part of Vallée du Rhône) thanks to a very long dynasty of vignerons that started from Eugène Raspail, a public figure of Gigondas who built Château Raspail and created the Domaine in 1854. The descendants of Eugène Raspail, the Ay family, are currently running the family property made of 19ha on a contiguous vineyard, a mid-slope terroir with a clay and limestone soil profile.

The vineyard is all organised around the estate, closed to the Dentelles de Montmirail. This sunny exposure helps to reach an optimal ripeness. Christophe Ay and his sister Anne-Sophie, assisted by the patriarch Dominique, represent the seventh generation at this venerable family-run estate.

They produce only Gigondas and only a single cuvée each year. Plantings are 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, all on the plain in front of the village. The vineyard is quite old (45 years old), offering a naturally high level of ripeness and concentration. The grapes are hand-picked and all destemmed, then fermented in vats for one month, using indigenous yeasts before a long ageing in old foudres (~600 litres) for at least two years. The yields resulting from this old vineyard are naturally low, delivering juices with good acidity and long ageing potential. These wines are Gigondas at their most perfumed, elegant and graceful profile. No need to say those wines are ageing beautifully with a lot of tertiary aromas (roses, Chinese spices, black olive and truffle).

Raspail-Ay Gigondas, the iconic cuvée, is aromatic, juicy with flavour and intensity, all while keeping its equilibrium. Balanced and vivacious, it offers rich, savoury scents and flavours of black raspberry, kirsch and garrigue that mingle with exotic spices and subtle hints of violet and rose. This satiny texture delivers a complex, intriguing and wholly enjoyable bold red. A gastronomic wine to be paired with provencal ratatouille, beef daube, eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers and tomatoes… and of course, a fougasse to complement it!
