It's an incredible story that Marlène Soria ... At the end of her brilliant career in real estate, she moved to the village of Saint Pargoire a few kilometers from Montpellier, in a property lost at the end of a path. Originally coming to hide from the world, she decided to clear the scrubland surrounding her house and turn everything into plots of vines in the early 1980s. Then, her sensitivity to the surface of her skin and her cravings for creativity grow to become a winemaker, one of the most talented now …
Between 1984 and 1987, she planted mostly Syrah, then Grenache and Mourvèdre for reds. The whites come from Rolle, Roussanne, Viognier, Ugni Blanc and Terret varieties. The 17 hectares of the estate are planted in 3 years. From the beginning, organic farming is a motto of the estate. The first winemaking took place in 1988 and two years later, it was the first bottling. This is how the world-famous Marlene Soria wines were born, which seduce year after year the palate of connoisseurs ...
Today, the estate covers 25 hectares of vines including 23 in red and the rest in white. In a purely Mediterranean climate and in a beautifully hilly vineyard, clay-limestone soils are mainly composed of friable rocks and hard pebbles.
In the vineyards, Marlène Soria pampers her plants as nobody. Here, the Syrah is queen, composing the grape variety of the reds to 70%. Other plots are planted in black Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan. Let's not forget the white with 50% of Rolle (the Italian Vermentino) then several other grape varieties including the Viognier which expresses itself divinely well with Peyre Rose. Marlène Soria follows the principles of organic farming with the aim of revealing the expression of the terroir in her greatest sincerity. The yields are very low giving concentrated juices and clearly pruned for the guard.
In the cellars, one obviously feels the close link with the vines. The winemaking is done in concrete vats (painted in pink too) and specially adapted to the harvest of parcels. This is followed by long maturing in barrels and then a rest of a small decade before marketing. All Marlene Soria's philosophy is to sell only mature wines ready to drink!
The range consists of four cuvées all as exceptional as the others. Three cuvées in red: the cuvée "Marlène", resulting from an equivalent blend of Syrah and Grenache complemented by Tempranillo (king of Rioja grape variety), is extremely fragrant and of a purely Mediterranean race. The Cuvée "Syrah Léone"composed almost exclusively of Syrah seasoned Mourvèdre gives wines wide, greedy and an exceptional brightness. The "Clos des Cistes" shows more depth and complexity, but is appreciated after a few years of aging, due to its solid tannic structure. Last cuvée, a rarity that asserts today as the most accomplished Languedoc white, the vintage "Oro". Assembled by Rolle, Roussanne and Viogner and aged for several years in vats, this white shows a perfect balance between creaminess and tension, all in a set of rare emotions.
