Over the past decade, Domaine Felettig has gained a solid reputation among the wine world, considering Felettig’s wine as some of the finest in Chambolle Musigny. From 2015 to the present, Domaine Felettig's wine quality has been significantly improved in every vintage, showing a vigorous and endless energy.
Domaine Felettig was founded by Henri Felettig in 1965 when he only had two hectares of vineyards. Nowadays the domain managed by Gilbert Felettig farms 13 hectares of vineyard spread over 100 different plots. The largest plot is only 0.5 hectares and Gilbert insists on making single-vineyard wines as much as possible.
These plots are scattered among various villages of Cote de Nuit, as well as Corton and Beaune. Most of the vineyards are in Chambolle-Musigny, where Gilbert produces from a mix of 15 different plots; 9 premier Cru: Les Carrières, fresh and vigorous; Les Combottes, luxurious and fruity; Les Charmes, graceful softness; Les Fuées, exotic style, and Les Feusselottes, generosity and solidity, etc.
Vosne Romanée is the second focus of the winery with premier cru Les Petits Monts and Les Chaumes which are usually blended. Gilbert has always believed that Les Petits Monts, being located just above Richebourg, should be a nice terroir to vinify as a single vineyard. In 2019, Gilbert was finally able to do so but the production was really limited and so far, 2019 is the only vintage where Gilbert was able to make it happen. His other interesting premier Cru is without any doubt Aux Reignots located just above La Romanée and Romanée Conti. Last but not least, we shall not forget his tiny plot of Echezeaux Grand Cru.
In winemaking, Gilbert has no established model nor method. In order to accurately and faithfully convey the terroir characteristics of each plot, each year is a new experiment. Since 2015, he has gradually increased the proportion of whole cluster fermentation and fine-tuned it according to the year. As the ripeness of the burgundy fruit has become higher and higher, he has consciously reduced it. Since vintage 2019, Gilbert has only used a single basket vertical press in order to extract flavours and structural substances more gently and to avoid unwanted bitterness.
Through repeated consideration and exploration of every winemaking detail, Gilbert's wines have become more and more pure and delicate, without the roughness of the early years. However, these wines still maintain a distinct personality. In comparison with many light Chambolle wines, Gilbert's wines have a soothing sense of steadiness and unpretentious true background.
