L'Arlésienne

Benoît Moreau

L'Arlésienne was established in 2020 as a small project by Benoît Moreau in partnership with a close friend. Inspired by the untapped potential of Beaujolais terroirs, Benoît acquired 1.7 hectares of high-altitude vineyards in Morgon and Chiroubles.

These old-vine plots, situated above 400 meters, reflect his passion for farming exceptional Gamay. The project focuses on crafting super-elegant wines that deviate from the traditional Beaujolais style, blending biodynamic farming with semi-Burgundian winemaking techniques.

Benoît Moreau’s approach to farming in Beaujolais is rooted in meticulous biodynamic practices (certification underway). The old bush vines, planted on granitic soils, are farmed with extraordinary care despite the challenging terrain.

All vineyard work is done manually, including spraying, to maintain the health of the vines and the soil. Green cover crops are used to build organic matter, enhance biodiversity, and protect the vineyards during the summer months.

The focus on natural farming reflects a deep commitment to preserving the land and producing wines of purity and character.

The winemaking at L'Arlésienne combines innovative techniques with respect for tradition. Semi-Burgundian methods are employed to craft refined and elegant Gamay wines. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts, ensuring that the wines express their unique terroir.

Whole-cluster inclusion varies by vintage, and no sulfur dioxide is added during the vinification of Gamay. Aging takes place in amphorae or 500L barrels to preserve the varietal’s freshness and finesse. This thoughtful, minimalist approach results in vibrant wines that showcase the granitic soils and high-altitude origins of the vineyards.
